Where has North America Been?

Earth’s crust consists of 7 large plates (and many smaller ones) that float and move around its molten core. Plate tectonics describes the movement of these plates. That means that our continent is on the move! In fact, the North American plate moves west-southwest an average of one inch every year. That distance adds up over the course of billions of years. The geologic record shows that North America has already traveled great distances. It was once located below the equator.
