Inventions from Space

The benefits from NASA missions weren't just limited to space! Technology in the medical field, in the armed services and in your daily life has been advanced by space exploration. Here are a few examples:

Water purifier

Water purifiers were developed for Apollo astronauts. The Apollo missions were long enough that astronauts needed a way to recycle their water. This technology is now in homes around the world.

Mobile phone cameras

In the 1990s, NASA developed cameras for space that were smaller, were more energy-efficient and took clear pictures. This tech is now in most cameras, including your mobile phone.

Fire-resistant materials

To protect astronauts from fire, NASA needed fire-resistant spacesuits. The same fire-resistant material they produced is now in most firefighters' protective gear.

Cordless tools

To collect lunar core samples, NASA needed cordless drills. The batteries that they developed led to the creation of, among other things, cordless vacuums.

A "brain" for cars and drones

When NASA sent a rover to Mars, it needed to be able to react if there was an obstacle or threat. The computer brain developed for the rover led to similar technology in cars and drones, such as automatic braking systems and self-driving cars.
