DO YOU SUPPORT THE CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW BRIDGE TO CONNECT CINCINNATI AND NORTHERN KENTUCKY?

It is 1856 and civic leaders have proposed a suspension bridge to span the wide expanse of river between Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. Do you support the project?

BEYOND THE BASIN

Definitely not. I work on the steamboats that use the river every day, and this bridge will hinder boat traffic and destroy my job.

Didn't you hear about those suspension bridges in Wheeling and on the Licking River that collapsed? I don't trust these newfangled designs - we should stick with boats to get across the river.

Yes! I live in Covington but work in Cincinnati, and I would love a more convenient way to get across the river. Now, I ride a slow, crowded ferry to my job. A bridge would be much easier and faster - I wouldn't even mind paying a toll. Suspension bridges are the future, after all - they've made a huge difference in Europe. Why shouldn't Cincinnati be as au courant as Paris?
